                                    Sankalp

A caravan designed and executed by India's 5 th winter team.Presented to Indian Antarctic expeditions.

When the 5 th winter team took over Indian Antarctic station Dakshingangotri, they had the added responsbility of tranporting two small dozers to Maitri, the second station under construction in Shirmacher ranges, close to Russia's station "Novolazaravskia ".Land movement cannot be undertaken during summer as the icy surface will be weak, and the dozer may sink into sea.

The 7 th Expedition left Antarctica un ceremoniously due to blizzard conditions. The 5 th winter leader Colonel Ganesan, had a thorough mental living in Antarctica before even reaching Antarctica and had a weekwise planning for the entire wintering period.

So he was not perturbed on the developments as it was expected. The USA publication ,"survival in Antarctica "was a guide by his side which says that the most happiest moment may sydenly will turn out to be a matter of life and death.

So the Colonel called his winter team and explained his year long activities, including transportation of the two dozers. It was decided that the dozers will be loaded on Trailers and moved after the Polar Night some time in August 1988.

During the land movement overnight stay enroute cannot be avoided. So Colonel decided that a caravan would be designed for 5-6 people to stay, cook  and toilet arrangements. A 20 feet container would be used for this.

The Engineers team consisting of Colonel himself, assisted by N/Sub Rajan (Electrician ) and L/Nk Sreekumar (Crpenter ) were given the the task.A wonderfull caravan emerged with all facilities including a Radio room for communication.
The caravan was named "ASHRAY " and inauguration date fixed.Such dates were fixed twice but could not be carried out due to Blizzard condition. Ganesan changed the name to "Sankalp "and informed all members that Sankalp would be inaugurated on 20 April 1988  irrespective of any hazzard. And It was inaugurated and taken for for a trial round.

Colonel Ganesan who hails from Tamilnadu, the spiritual centre of the world,  made a small platform at the entrance of Sankalp. There he installed the cosmic dance posture of Lord Siva to signify that "Man is the creater-representing the Lord in miniature form.

Shiva’s cosmic dance symbolizes the interaction between the static and the dynamic energy flow. This energy flow contains five principles – Creation, destruction, preservation, illusion and emancipation. Shiva’s RudraTandava is a ‘dance of destruction’. The destruction happens with the occurring of radiant fire, wild thunder storms spreading all over the universe destroying and shattering everything including the Sun, Moon and the stellar bodies. His appearance is so different and unique- with matted hair, three marks of ash on his forehead, with an hour glass shaped drum known as ‘dumaroo’ in his upright hand. He stands on the demon of ignorance, balancing on his right leg as a snake crawls over his legs, arms and hair. On his head is knotted hair, where Goddess Ganga, the epitomising holy river, sits. The skull over his head represents the conquest over death. Under his feet is a dwarf man called ‘Apasmara‘, who is a demon who representing ignorance and epilepsy. As a sign of destruction, Lord Shiva supresses ‘Apasmara’ by stamping him with one leg.

Surprisingly ,The Nataraja " symbol has become amatter of science study .

Physicists and engineers at CERN use the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter – fundamental particles. Subatomic particles are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives us clues about how the particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. We want to advance the boundaries of human knowledge by delving into the smallest building blocks of our universe.

The figure of Nataraja is enclosed in a ring of fire which represents the continuous creation and destruction of the universe. The mass, space and time are enclosed within this cosmic ring of fire.  On his upper right hand, he held the Damru [his favourite instrument in the shape of hourglass]. It represents creation and time. However, his lower right hand is lifted up in Abhaya Mudra, which is his message to all, whoever follows the path of truth and righteousness will be blessed. His upper left-hand holds fire, the symbol of destruction. His lower left hand is raised near his chest with his palms facing down. It symbolises the mastery of meditation and attained enlightenment. His right leg is placed on a demon named Apasmara, which signifies the end of ignorance.

WHAT A GREAT MATTER OF CO INCIDENCE
